Sep. 6: Kritzerland’s 5th Anniversary – Sterling’s Upstairs at The Federal

Damon Kirsche and John Boswell perform “Liza (All the Clouds’ll Roll Away)”
 - music by George Gershwin, Lyrics by Ira Gershwin and Gus Kahn at Kritzerland’s 5th Anniversary
On Sunday, September 6, 2015 at 7:00 PM, Kritzerland at Sterling's Upstairs at The Federal presents their 5th anniversary show, “THE SONGS THAT GOT AWAY IV,” with musical director John Boswell.

In September 2010 we began a monthly series of shows, the first year and three months of which were at The Gardenia. Michael Sterling then took us to Sterling’s Upstairs at Vitello’s, where we played only three shows, then we moved with him to his new venue, Sterling’s Upstairs at The Federal, where we’ve happily been ever since. Thankfully, the shows were popular right from the first, but who knew that sixty-one shows later we’d still be here for our fifth anniversary show, having never missed a month in all those years. We believe that makes us the longest consecutively running cabaret show of this type in LA history. Our anniversary shows are always wild, wooly and wacky and this one will be no exception. We have gathered an absolutely amazing cast for this show.

We call the show “The Songs That Got Away” because we usually do songs that we haven’t been able to fit in any other shows. But it’s morphed into much more than that. While we don’t like to reveal anything about the show, we can assure you it will be filled with the usual mix of the known and unknown, a couple of brand new things and some surprises – there will be beautiful ballads, funny stuff, and toe-tapping, tuneful up-tempos. Our anniversary shows normally sell out instantly, so don’t play the waiting game on this one, which is why we’re announcing reservations earlier than usual. The Kritzerland shows are produced and hosted by Bruce Kimmel and co-produced by Adryan Russ.

Damon Kirsche was in glorious voice and provided that sparkle of old Broadway / Hollywood glamour that makes every role he takes on magical... I’m still waiting for someone to write him a role set in the 1920s/’30s that captures all of the things he does so well and lets him put his stamp on an original character.”

Music Director: Lloyd Cooper
"Our April 2013 Kritzerland at Sterling’s, our 32nd show, features the songs of the legendary Comden and Green, or Betty and Adolph as they liked to be called. Producer Bruce Kimmel recorded and released a lot of their music, from a Sally Mayes solo album, devoted to them, to the revival cast recording of Bells Are Ringing, to reissues of A Doll’s Life and Subways are for Sleeping.
Comden and Green burst on the Broadway scene with On The Town and after that auspicious debut they wrote an amazing array of Broadway musicals, including Wonderful Town, Peter Pan, Bells Are Ringing, Subways are for Sleeping, Do Re Mi, Fade Out - Fade In, Hallelujah, Baby, On the Twentieth Century, and The Will Rogers Follies. They also wrote the MGM musical, It’s Always Fair Weather, and provided the screenplays for some pretty amazing MGM musicals, including Good News, The Barkleys of Broadway, The Band Wagon and, of course, perhaps the greatest MGM musical of them all – Singin’ in the Rain. They worked with amazing composers – Leonard Bernstein, Jule Styne, Andre Previn, and Cy Coleman, and gave the world such incredible standards as “New York, New York,” “The Party’s Over,” “Just in Time,” “Make Someone Happy,” “I Can Cook, Too,” “Never Never Land,” “Long Before I Knew You,” and many, many others.
We have a great cast for this show, along with the always-amazing Jason Graae, our guest star. There’s even a rumor that Guy Haines may make an appearance. So, join us for a celebration of Comden and Green and some of their most beloved songs – as always with a Kritzerland show, you’ll get the classics along with some lesser-known gems."

Our show for May is kind of a put-together of Bruce Kimmel’s Broadway Bound CD (New Writers for the Musical Theatre) mixed with some songs by composers and lyricists who, while having written shows that made it to Broadway, never quite got in the front rank of musical theatre writers. These unsung songwriters have written some pretty terrific stuff, so we’re happy to resurrect some of their wonderful songs. It’s an evening of songs you probably haven’t heard before, along with a couple of songs that actually became hits but were from unsuccessful shows. It’s the kind of show Kritzerland loves to do, so come on down and hear some absolutely brilliant material delivered by a stellar cast.
